Technology advice follows the data and the transaction

Technology, media and privacy matters should be approached through the actual service, information flows, contractual allocation of responsibility and incident record. A generic policy is not a substitute for understanding those facts.

Map the service

Identify the product, platform, counterparties, users and relevant contracts. Keep terms, licences, vendor arrangements and the disputed communications together.

Map the information

Identify what personal information is collected, why, where it moves and who can access it. Review the current commencement notifications as well as the Act and Rules; obligations should not be assumed to begin on the same date.

Preserve incident records

For digital fraud or an alleged misuse, retain transaction references, original messages, account information and contemporaneous reports securely. Urgent safety or financial steps should not depend on a general website enquiry.

General information, not advice on a particular matter. Do not send confidential records until the office confirms an appropriate process. Engagement remains subject to conflict, availability and scope checks.

Cyber fraud, impersonation or misuse of digital information?

For immediate reporting of financial cyber fraud, use the official National Cybercrime Reporting Portal or 1930. Do not wait for a response from this website before taking urgent protective or reporting steps. A report does not guarantee recovery.

Preserve the incident record

Retain transaction references, complaint acknowledgments, original messages, email headers, web addresses and the sequence of events. Identify which accounts or devices may be affected. Do not publish passwords, OTPs, full bank details or sensitive personal records in an enquiry.

Identify the legal question

A banking transaction dispute, criminal investigation, impersonation complaint and contractual data-security issue may require different steps. Explain what has been reported, which authority or institution has responded, and what relief or immediate protection is sought.
